The Home:

After 32 years of making memories in the same kitchen, Janet-an accomplished interior designer-finally decided it was time to give her own home the transformation it deserved. The original builder layout served its purpose, becoming the backdrop for countless family meals, celebrations, and everyday chaos as she and her husband raised their three children. But now, with an eye for design and a desire for more functionality, Janet set out to create a space that not only works better for her family but also reflects the warmth and style she has brought to so many of her clients' homes.

After 21 years in decorating and design, we understand that if projects were easy, we would not be hired to help. Despite this known fact, why are we surprised when the complexity of client requirements creates design challenges that continue to push our creativity and crews?

The Home:
This 3,900 square foot single family home, built in 1995, boasts a kitchen overlooking the yard and situated between the family and dining room. On paper this layout may look perfect, but has multiple functionality challenges. This kitchen and dining room has 4 entry points, 5 long windows, a set of exterior patio doors and 2 walls.

The Home: 

A well-built, custom house that is 17 years old and not designed to the clients’ specific taste. 

The Opportunity: 

A propitious water leak in the basement that damaged the carpeting and walls in the walk-out basement that had never been redecorated. 

Our clients, both old and new, are finding our concierge service even more valuable today. This turnkey process includes managing ordering, budgeting, delivery, set up and installation, so that our clients can relax and spend their valuable time running their own businesses and households. Even the best designs and management may encounter challenges and in today’s environment where delays are more commonplace, our clients can rest assured that their design team will be working hard to resolve issues and find solutions. 

Updating your fireplace and surround can completely change the style of a room. The first in our fireplace update series is one of the most dramatic we have completed. 

Our clients are most comfortable living in a modern home. So, when they purchased a traditional style home, one of the first steps was to install wide plank, dark hardwood floors on the main and upper levels, paint the handrail and balusters, and install new stairs. Despite these changes, the traditional brown brick fireplace was the first design element visible as soon as you walked into the home. 

The SDI design team is currently working on a home gym and outdoor living area for our return clients who live in Broadlands.

It's hard to believe that half of 2020 is already over. Many of us are ready or have started to implement a few changes after the unexpected time at home. No one could have predicted that we would be working from home, managing school from home, preparing and eating meals from home every day since March. It's safe to say that our homes have been put to the test. How did yours fare?

New Year’s Eve feels like it was just yesterday. The SDI team was excited to begin the new year working with many new and returning clients on interior design and custom remodeling projects. January and February went by quickly and then suddenly in mid-March we were all facing the coronavirus pandemic.
