Some of the most exciting decorating projects begin with a home that’s a blank slate. In this particular instance, our client was moving from London to DC into a historic row house; he wasn’t bringing any of his existing furnishings and he was hoping to have the whole house furnished in just a few months.  We told him we’d love to help!

Many parts of the home featured gorgeous exposed brick walls and we wanted to feature and compliment them artfully. As you look at the photos you will see the brick walls acting as beautiful backdrops and focal points and that we chose shades of orange, from bright to burnished, as our accent color.

The first level has an open layout and was going to be used for entertaining so creating functional seating areas was key.  In the main living area, seating for five is situated around the fireplace which is the focal point with an additional cozy space for two guests in the window niche. This niche space is a perfect spot for enjoying a cup of coffee while reading the paper or even playing a game of cards.

Bridging the area between the living and dining room is a unique bookcase where we displayed personal items, books and other accessories.

The dining room will accommodate 6-8 for dinner parties and features a handsome bar cabinet that opens up for mixing and serving drinks and easily closes to a compact size when not in use.

The master bedroom was selected for its quieter location. It includes an area we converted to a dressing room and private access to an outdoor deck.

The lovely guest room has an exposed brick niche area positioned behind an arched opening. This was the perfect spot for a queen size bed, which we flanked with open shelved nightstands.  We created a reading nook in the bay window with a comfortable chair and ottoman.  The bright and burnished orange is the perfect punch of color alongside the earthy tones of the brick and the dark gray walls.  And the window treatments are simply stunning!

The third bedroom became a cozy family room -- the perfect spot for relaxing and watching television.  Selecting a sofa that would fit up a tight, 24”-wide stairwell was tricky, but with our extensive furniture vendors we were able to create this great oversized sofa with chaise.

For a final touch, you will see that we hung a grouping of twelve framed photographs of families, friends and vacations behind the seating area.

The client was very pleased with the results and so are we! We are happy to share the testimonial below, which he posted for us on Houzz after the project was completed.

"Janet helped me from April - August 2016 to decorate my new row house in DC. I started without any furniture and Janet worked with me to systematically move through the house from dining room to living room, two bedrooms, and TV den. She was excellent at bringing me options and styles that matched my tastes, fit in with the exposed brick and flooring already in the house, and was available quickly (given I was already living in an empty house). She managed all the logistics, purchasing, delivery, and installation - and it was great to come home from work trips and vacation to brand new additions in the house. She also did a great job working with the wall art and accessories I already had while adding a few more to complement. The end result is a very comfortable, functional, and great looking house (while everyone who comes shocked I only moved into 4-5 months ago). Thank you Janet!"
